The "Pirul Woman" Who Changed Lives
Mrs. Manju R. Shah's journey is one of extraordinary determination. Known as the "Pirul Woman" of Uttarakhand, she turned locally abundant pine needles — which contribute to forest fires and pollution — into beautiful, marketable handicrafts.
Through Dhuri Foundation's support, she conducts technical training workshops where women learn to create baskets, table mats, rakhis, decorative items, and bouquets from pirul leaves. These sessions have provided economic independence to hundreds of rural women.

The Pirul Workshop —
Waste to Wealth
Pine needles (pirul) were once a major fire hazard in Uttarakhand's forests. Mrs. Manju R. Shah, with Dhuri Foundation's backing, transformed this waste into an economic opportunity.
Women across 45+ self-help groups now create gift items, baskets, table mats, rakhis, decorative items and bouquets — selling them across India. Sessions are conducted both in-person and online via Google Meet.
